Header evidence
No header evidence to show.

A matching signature is a hint. It does not prove the file is valid, safe or authentic. Some file types share headers; many have no supported match.

Byte window

Hex + printable ASCII

Decimal or hex, such as 256 or 0x100.

Choose a file to inspect a window of up to 256 bytes.

Byte offsets, hexadecimal bytes and printable ASCII. Other bytes appear as a dot.

Reports include the selected window and header evidence, not every byte in the file.

What can a header tell you?

A file extension is part of its name. A signature is a pattern in its bytes. Comparing them can help explain a failed import or a file with a missing extension.

Which signatures are checked?

PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, Windows icons and cursors, WebP, PDF, ZIP local headers, GZIP, RAR 4, TrueType, OpenType, WOFF and WOFF 2. An unrecognised result may be a different format, a different container variant or a short file. It does not mean the file is damaged.

Can it identify a Word document inside a ZIP container?

No. DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, EPUB and several other formats use ZIP. A ZIP header is compatible with those extensions, but the tool does not unpack or validate the contents.

Will inspecting a file change it?

No. The tool reads small byte ranges and displays text. It does not execute, decode or modify the file. Clear releases the selected file from this page.
