Every byte counts.
Drop a file here to calculate its checksum.
Any file type · up to 2 GBUTF-8 text · up to 500,000 characters. Text line endings use LF; choose File to preserve original bytes. Empty text has a valid checksum too.
Choose a file to calculate its checksum.
Same file.
Same checksum.
Confirm that a download or copied file has the exact bytes you expected. Files are read in small chunks so large files stay manageable.
What does a matching checksum prove?
It confirms the file matches the checksum you supplied. Get that checksum from a trusted publisher or separate trusted channel. A matching checksum alone does not prove a file is safe or authentic.
Which algorithm should I use?
Choose SHA-256 for a new checksum, or match the algorithm used by your publisher. Paste an expected SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512 value to select its algorithm automatically. MD5 and SHA-1 are not offered.
Can I use a checksum file?
Paste one checksum, one standard checksum-and-filename line, or a line such as SHA256(file) = checksum. Multiple lines are rejected. This tool compares one file at a time; it does not check entire manifests.
Are my files uploaded or saved?
No. This calculator processes your source in a worker on this device and does not save your file, text or checksum. Copy the checksum or save the report before leaving. Files up to 2 GB are supported; speed depends on your device.
