How are words and characters counted?
Words contain letters or numbers. Apostrophes and hyphens within a word stay together. Punctuation and emoji alone are not words. Supported browsers use language-aware segmentation for scripts such as Chinese and Thai. Characters count visible graphemes, so an emoji or an accented letter usually counts as one. Results may differ from a publishing platform.
Does character count include spaces?
Yes. Characters includes spaces and line breaks. Without spaces excludes whitespace. Highlight text to see its word and character counts without changing the full totals.
Is my text saved?
This quick counter keeps text only in the current tab. Copy it or download a TXT file before leaving. Your saved Writing Workspace documents are separate and remain available in Workspace.
How accurate are the reading and speaking times?
They are estimates at 200 words per minute for reading and 130 for speaking. Sentence counts use punctuation; paragraph counts use non-empty lines. Abbreviations, writing styles and languages can give different results.
